Congratulations rail team

Congratulations rail team

1 June, 2007

On behalf of the region, ARC chairman Michael Lee extends thanks and congratulations to ONTRACK for the completion of the latest phase of double-tracking on the western line, between Titirangi Rd and Henderson.

“This was a difficult project, with the construction crew working alongside a functioning commuter railway. It’s been a difficult time for passengers, but for a worthwhile goal. We appreciate their patience while the network is being upgraded so train services can be improved.

“The ARC started the western line project off in 2004. It is now over half way. This latest milestone is about more than finishing another 7.5 km of train tracks. Revitalised rail is a regional asset, and it takes a regional effort.

“Our ability to work together is in itself an asset, and necessary to support Auckland’s economic and population growth. Major rail projects are to follow at Newmarket, New Lynn and Onehunga, as well as the electrification of the commuter network.

“I wish ONTRACK well as it tests the new tracks over the holiday weekend.”

The ARC acknowledges:
- ONTRACK for bringing the project to fruition;
- The construction crew for its patience for the many times it had to down tools while trains passed;
- The Auckland Regional Transport Authority, backed by ARC ratepayers, for upgrading stations at Henderson, Sunnyvale, Glen Eden and Fruitvale Rd, and for improving services;
- Veolia Transport and its staff for working under often difficult circumstances;
- The travelling public which continues to climb onto commuter trains in record numbers.
