Second Track Improves Services on Western Line

The Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) said today that following the completion of double tracking works on the Western line between New Lynn (Titirangi Road) and Henderson (Mt Lebanon Lane), commuters can expect to see more frequent and reliable services.

Commuters will be able to use both platforms at Fruitvale Road, Glen Eden and Sunnyvale stations from Tuesday 5 June.

MAXX ambassadors will be in place at Fruitvale Road, Glen Eden and Sunnyvale stations on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 June to direct and advise passengers about changes.

ARTA’s General Manager, Customer Services, Mark Lambert says, “The introduction of a second track along the Western line will benefit Aucklanders by allowing service improvements and an increase in frequency and reliability.

“We recognise that the work has caused some disruptions to commuters, but passengers should now see an improved rail service.”

Mr Lambert said that to coincide with the opening of the second track there will be timetable changes announced next week, to accommodate increased frequency of services.

Other improvements include an expanded fleet of refurbished trains, station upgrades and improved passenger information.

Mr Lambert said that the opening of the second line means that pedestrians and motorists now need to take extra care near stations, as they adjust to the additional track.

“ARTA is working proactively with ONTRACK, Veolia Transport, Land Transport New Zealand, the NZ Police and Waitakere City Council to ensure safety around the rail corridor.

“Two tracks means that two trains are in operation, therefore people need to take extra care near stations, use level and pedestrian crossings at all times and be sure to look both ways when crossing a track.

“Walking on the tracks, except at proper crossings, is illegal.”
