Auckland City Libraries is coming alive with the sound of music to celebrate NZ Music Month in May.
The libraries will showcase the huge range of musical talent in Auckland, with local musicians performing concerts that range from classical and jazz to pop and folk.
Highlights of NZ Music Month Live at the Library programme (listed below) include Auckland acoustic trio Flammable Tramp (Central City Library, 4 May) and The Auckland Salon Orchestra (Central City Library, 12 May).
For hip-hop fans,DJ Definite of duo Definite and Bling will be funking the beat (Mt Roskill Community Library, 9 May) and Mt Albert Community Library is hosting a special talent quest for 12-year-olds and younger on 19 May.
ThePinnacle Country Music Club will be sure to get the toes tapping for country music fans (Avondale Community Library, 26 May).
During May, just by borrowing a music item from an Auckland city library, you go into the draw for $500 worth of Marbecks CD vouchers. Library users can also win spot prizes by borrowing a CD or attending a Music Month concert at any Auckland city library. There is also a three-for-one special on borrowing CDs for only $5.
Musicians aged between 13 and 16 years could also win a free day of studio time at The Lab Recording Studio, one of Auckland’s premier studios, by writing a score or making a CD recording of their own original work from any musical genre. The deadline for entries is 20 May.
Throughout May, an exhibition of interesting memorabilia and wonderful images of the Ponsonby Brass Band from the turn of the 20th century will be held at Leys Institute Ponsonby Community Library.
Auckland City Council funds 16 community libraries, the Central City Library and a mobile library.
Auckland City Libraries is supporting NZ Music Month to highlight the libraries’ comprehensive music collections and reference services, and to provide a platform for local musicians to perform and be heard by a wide audience.
