Relief for ratepayers welcomed
“The increase in the subsidy for Wellington rail improvements from 60 to 90 per cent by Land Transport New Zealand is the second piece of really awesome news LTNZ have announced for Kapiti ratepayers in a week,” Kapiti Coast District Mayor Alan Milne said today.
“It’s good news for ratepayers and it’s good news for the environment.
“First there was the very welcome news that the $106 million Stage 1 of the Western Link Road will receive a 90 per cent subsidy and now there’s the change in subsidy for rail improvements. Both of these are great news for Kapiti Coast ratepayers.
“What is particularly gratifying is that both the rail and Western Link Road work will enhance transport options for the Kapiti Coast and should both result in considerable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions over time.
“Improved rail services will take more cars off the roads and improved alternative roads will mean fewer hold ups and less fuel wasted by cars and trucks sitting in traffic jams.
“The increase in rail subsidy means regional transport will benefit in other areas as the money saved can be allocated to projects elsewhere.”
