Mayors, MPs and Malawians in town
March 22, 2007
A West Indian mayor, another from Sierra Leone, a Ugandan MP and a contingent of Malawians are being taken on a guided infrastructural tour of North Shore City before they attend next week’s Commonwealth Local Government Conference in Auckland.
Local civic leader George Wood is officially hosting mayoral counterparts Murchison Brown of Port of Spain [Trinidad & Tobago] and Winstanly Johnson of Freetown [Sierra Leone], together with John Otekat MP and Malawian delegates until Saturday.
Mr Wood says while he’s keen to raise with Mayor Brown the issue of the Cricket World Cup currently under way in the West Indies, his council has a seriously packed agenda and information to share with their guests.
“In Albany, we’re showcasing our Park & Ride transport station, upgraded wastewater treatment plant and North Harbour Stadium as well as North Shore City’s Civil Defence HQ and Takapuna Library,” he says.
In addition to this week’s programme, North Shore City Council will host up to 50 delegates in a study tour of Northcote next Wednesday [March 28] as part of the three-day conference.
Many others will check out the ferry and train facilities across the region as delegates, both local and overseas, compare notes on the ways and means of running a city.
