A proposed new look for Auckland's street trading

AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL
MEDIA RELEASE

13 March 2007

A proposed new look for Auckland's street trading

Auckland City Council today begins a series of workshops with key businesses across the city to consult on changes to street trading on public land. The draft street trading policy is in response to increased demand for the commercial use of public land.

The workshops, to be held in nine key business areas, will highlight proposed plans to implement a clear licensing structure for trading. The proposed plans are also applicable to mobile trading, and goods displayed on the street by adjoining businesses. The licensing fee will be determined once the policy is approved, but is anticipated to cover administration, monitoring of the policy and improvements to the streetscape.

Councillor Penny Sefuiva, chairperson of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee, said this approach will ensure outdoor trading standards on public land are adhered to and will help to create a pedestrian-focused street environment.

"The aim is to create and maintain a quality and consistent streetscape environment. The street trading approach aims to balance the needs of Auckland's residents and businesses. To help build and enhance our beautiful city, we need to develop a fair and equitable street trading policy so all street users can appreciate and enjoy our public spaces.

"Some businesses might not agree with the draft policy, but if they're using public areas for commercial purposes, a pricing structure will ensure a level playing for businesses in the area."

Once business owners and community boards have provided their feedback, a draft policy will be presented to the council in July.
