Trolley Derby Has New Victor

Trolley Derby Has New Victor

Nelson has a new King of the Hill - Tim Bayley took the title on Saturday at Nelson's Collingwood Street Fresh Choice Trolley Derby, racing in a streamlined wood-ribbed construction called Red Rak Racer II.

Bayley was clocked by Nelson Police at 70 kmh, wresting the title from Lincoln McKenzie who won last year in a Sam Laidlaw trolley. Laidlaw trolleys took second and third places, clocking times of 67 and 66kph. Bayley also won the adult Rockets section, ahead of the Laidlaw trolleys. And he provided one of the most spectacular crashes of the day when his original trolley, Red Rak Racer I went out of control in the Monarch of the Hill and ploughed into the safety barriers - no-one was injured.

The trolley derby was raced in perfect conditions, drawing a crowd of over 4-thousand over the day, peaking during the afternoon finals.

Christchurch couple Brian and Sharon Smith won the Style Meister award for the second year running, with their impeccable replica 1936 Auto Union and 1925 Bugatti, complete with black and white checkered Œpits¹ and authentic pre-war racing outfits.

The Nippers race (under 6) was won by Luke Rowberry in Lightning Luke; Zoomers (7-10 years) went to Jared Williams in The JJ Racer; and Sprinters (11- 14 years) was taken by Philip Palzer in Free Spirit.

Event director Antony Hodgson said it is great to see the Fresh Choice Trolley Derby growing each year as a major Nelson community event.

³The trolley derby has evolved to be a real celebration of back yard creativity and ingenuity,² he said. ³One of the things I really like about it is the age range - we have everyone from under-sixes to a over eighties. I can¹t think of another participation event with that age range.²

And he paid tribute to the YIMBYs of Collingwood Street - the neighbours who say Yes to the event.

³The people of Collingwood Street have been fantastically supportive and have let us have free use of everything from shady front lawns and garages through to electricity for the PA and even broadband connections for our laptops.

The Trolley Derby is a Nelson City Council Summer Festival event. Full details of the results are available at www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz
