Toxic development
not wanted
Plans by Swiss-owned Holcim NZ Ltd
to build a $220 million cement works near Weston in North
Otago represent an out-dated, toxic form of development
which is not wanted in New Zealand, according to DSC Leader
Stephnie de Ruyter.
“Holcim’s cement works proposal, with its toxic emissions, is a matter of concern for nearby residents in Weston and Oamaru. But it is also of concern to all New Zealanders who care about the quality of air, water and soil in our country.
“The proposed plant will emit up to one million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. This appears to be at odds with the government’s recent statements urging a reduction in carbon emissions as an integral aspect of its climate change strategy” noted Ms de Ruyter.
“The discharge of heavy metals and pollutants will significantly impact on all aspects of the environment over time. The future of horticulture, tourism, fishing, agriculture and all other economic activity in the area will be put at risk as the cumulative impact of these industry-specific poisons takes effect.
“Although a few long-term jobs will be created, any profits from the plant’s operation will vanish off-shore. And the toxins will remain here” said Ms de Ruyter.
Ms de Ruyter concluded that Holcim’s cement plant proposal was contrary to the best interests of the region and must not proceed.
