Public transport before road pricing
Public transport before road pricing
15 February 2007
ARC chairman Mike Lee believes the transport ministry’s further investigation of road pricing will reinforce the council’s view that Auckland must have great public transport before motorists face any penalty for using inner city roads.
The ministry has today released the submissions analysis of the Auckland Road Pricing Evaluation Study (ARPES), and will undertake further work on the issue.
When the idea was raised last year most ARC members were unenthusiastic, though the council - by a narrow margin of one vote - supported further investigation.
“That’s because decisions on whether road pricing could be useful or workable should be made on the best information available,” Mr Lee said.
“However, there is also the question of support or otherwise from the community. This should not be overlooked.”
