Spend Your Own Cash Dick!

Auckland Mayoral Candidate Stephen Berry reckons that if Dick Hubbard is so passionate about building a tunnel underneath Victoria Park, he should front up with some of the cash himself. "It amazes me that someone who would have done the hard yards to build up his own business could be so enthusiastic about spending other people's money."

Transit New Zealand appears likely to choose a cheaper option for building extra roads around the Victoria Park area, which would mean a second viaduct crossing over the park. Berry says, "Considering the pressure currently on Auckland's roading system this seems to be quite a palatable option. At least Victoria Park will remain as one of the few open spaces in the city area."

"For Dick Hubbard to promise to fight 'tooth and nail' for the $320 million tunnel option is a massive punch in the face for every working family that struggles to put food on the table each evening."

"However Auckland voters should not be surprised. When I contested the 2004 mayoralty I warned that this 'unashamed futurist' would be ashamedly big spending and this has proven to be the case."

Stephen Berry is currently the only candidate in the mayoral race supporting cuts in council rates, spending and powers.
