Transit working to reopen Mitimiti Bridge Sunday

Auckland Regional Office

8 February 2007

Media Release

Transit working to reopen Mitimiti Bridge by Sunday

Transit New Zealand is working on repairs to flood damaged SH1 embankment at the southern approach to the Mitimiti Bridge north of Te Kao in the Far North.

The collapse of the embankment resulted in the closure of the bridge to all traffic.

Transit's Northern Operations Manager, Joseph Flanagan, says he is expecting to complete repairs by Sunday when the road and the bridge will be reopened.

'We are fortunate that it is the embankment and not the bridge that has been damaged by the flooding as we are able to get the job completed much faster this way. There is some minor damage to the bridge but we have been able to source locally the material needed to repair it.'

Mr Flanagan says Transit will also be repairing flood damage to other parts of the state highway but that this will not prevent motorists from using the road once the Mitimiti Bridge is reopened.
