Night Shelter's New Look and New Start

The bright, modern and freshly renovated Night Shelter on Taranaki St celebrates its reopening on Wednesday and with it a new life of providing shelter for men in need.

Wellington’s Mayor Kerry Prendergast will unveil a commemorative plaque and refreshments will follow at the conclusion of the re opening ceremony which begins at 12 midday.

Members of the public are welcome to attend but are asked to RSVP to the Compassion Centre on 385 9299 or email sacc[at]compassion.org.nz.

Night Shelter Manager Barry McDonald, excited about the new premises, says the refit has provided the opportunity to rethink how the Night Shelter can best contribute to ‘addressing homelessness in Wellington’.

“We’ve now formalised our policy for supporting each person who comes to us for accommodation and assisting them into more permanent accommodation.

This will see us liaise further with other agencies like Downtown Community Ministry who have great expertise at housing these folk.”

Barry says those coming to the opening will be amazed at the changes.

“It’s now so airy and clean. It’s really something to be proud of,” says Barry.

The Night Shelter has been supporting men in need of emergency accommodation for since 1968 and, Barry says, “It now has the facility to take it into the future”.
