Minor resource consent application for West Stand redevelopment lodged

Plans to fully complete the stadium bowl at Eden Park are a step closer with the Eden Park Trust Board this week lodging a minor resource consent application to redevelop the West Stand.

“Completing the stadium bowl is a win-win for the community and for the fans,” said Eden Park Chief Executive John Alexander.

“It will help create a great atmosphere for the Rugby World Cup and further reduce noise and light spill from the stadium into the local community.”

The new West Stand would have minimal impact on neighbouring properties as it looked over the number two ground and would be set back 150 metres from Sandringham Road, Mr Alexander said.

“Most of it is also going to be below the 30m building height limit allowed by council’s District Plan.”

Mr Alexander said redeveloping the West Stand had resulted in Eden Park being able to lower the height of the proposed South and East Stands, significantly reducing shading onto neighbouring properties.

“We’ve been able to lower the South Stand by five metres and the East Stand by nine.”

Mr Alexander said Eden Park was pleased with progress and remained on schedule for a September 2007 construction start.

“As well as looking forward to a decision on our main resource consent application in January, we are continuing to press on with essential design work to ensure no further time is lost.”

Mr Alexander said Eden Park would be consulting relevant property owners about the West Stand and would hold a community meeting to update residents on the redevelopment in the New Year.
