New year brings further investment in transport

Work will start in January upgrading a section of New Windsor’s Tiverton Road in a key transport project to support Transit New Zealand’s State Highway 20 Mt Roskill extension.

Auckland City’s $17 million Tiverton Road and Wolverton Street upgrade will be completed in two stages. Stage one is due to be completed by July 2007, transforming Tiverton Road, between Blockhouse Bay Road and Whitney Street.

The stage one work involves building two retaining walls along the service lane on the south side of Tiverton Road and widening the road to four lanes. The work also includes improving lighting and landscaping.

Stage two of the project involves widening Wolverton Road and the rest of Tiverton Road to four lanes, as well as improving intersections and undergrounding services along the route. Work on stage two is due to start in late 2007.

Councillor Richard Simpson says Auckland City is playing its part to support Transit’s SH20 Mt Roskill extension by preparing for anticipated traffic growth on local roads.

“Once completed, the upgrade will make this route a safer, more efficient link to State Highway 20 and strengthen the connection between Auckland and Waitakere cities.

“It has been designed to improve safety and efficiency for all road users, including cyclists, bus passengers, pedestrians and motorists.”

Mr Simpson says Auckland City undertook consultation in 2004 and 2005 on different aspects of the project including landscaping and design.

“We have worked with the community to ensure the upgrade meets local needs as well as those of other road users,” says Mr Simpson.

Disruption to traffic during work on stage one will be minor. However, there will be reduced lane width while Auckland City’s contractors Dempsey and Wood widen the road to four lanes.
