Lots of highlights in 2006 for Downtown Community Ministry
This Christmas, Downtown Community Ministry will celebrate a year characterised by growth. New premises were found and further initiatives to assist Wellingtonians affected by homelessness were started.
Our new home in Compassion House on Lukes Lane has proved ideal and has provided much better access to our services.
The Street People Project, and its work with people without access to a banking service, has recently been recognised by the Ministry of Social Development with the signing of a new contract. This work builds on the platform created by the SPP banking programme and supports clients’ access to training and paid work or other areas such as health or addiction services.
Throughout 2006 Project Margin Coordinator Di Landy ran a series of creative cooking classes using common foods from the food bank. The classes proved popular at educating clients on cooking nutritious meals at low cost. Look out for more next year.
Other highlights include:
The annual DCM Bookfair fundraiser.
A Thanksgiving lunch held in partnership with the U.S. Embassy with over 130 people attending.
Two great food bank appeals for DCM’s busy food bank.
May your Christmas be filled with happy times with family and friends. The first bulletin of 2007 will be sent on the 24th of January.
