Have a lark in the regional parks
Having fun in the sun has never been easier, with this summer’s opportunities for family adventure in our region’s parks and forests. They are all part of Greater Wellington’s 2007 Regional Outdoors Programme of events.
Now in its seventh year, the popular programme has over 40 events ranging from the Nature Discovery Treasure Hunt in Kaitoke Regional Park’s stunning low-land rainforest to Paws in the Park, where you can bring your dog for a walk through Tunnel Gully’s beautiful podocarp forest.
“There’s an incredible wealth of beauty and heritage in our region’s parks just waiting to be discovered,” says Cr Chris Laidlaw, Chair of the Greater Wellington’s Landcare Committee.
“This year, Greater Wellington has made it even easier to enjoy these environmental and recreational treasures by putting together a great programme of guided walks and adventures for the whole family to enjoy.”
Check out the vintage displays and guided nature walks at the Anything Vintage Festival at Queen Elizabeth Park. Or meet Kev the Wandering Kiwi in four of the Hutt Valley’s regional parks.
You can also try your hand at flood protection with the Hutt Great Gravel Grab and carry away some river stones for your garden landscaping. If that doesn’t take your fancy, you can Bike the Trail along the Hutt River.
All of the outdoor events are under an hour’s drive from Wellington city, so the programme is a great chance to check out a park that you haven’t visited before and discover some of the region’s most spectacular landscapes.
The events take place from 30 December 2006 to 1 April 2007. You can view the programme on Greater Wellington’s website www.gw.govt.nz. For information and bookings, call 04 381 7735 or email bookings@gw.govt.nz.
