Wanganui set to rock

Wanganui's Boxing Day Concert is certainly set to rock judging by the latest listing on the official New Zealand Music Charts.

The Feelers, who are one of the big name bands appearing in Wanganui, have raced to the top of the charts with their latest album, "One World," just a week after its release.

The group will be appearing along side other big names, including Dave Dobbyn and th'Dudes, Pearl and the House of Shem. The concert, to be held at Cooks Gardens on 26 December, is set to repeat the popularity of last year's enormously popular Boxing Day event at the same venue, which featured Jimmy Barnes.

Already rated one of the most successful bands in New Zealand history, indications are that the Feelers will repeat the success of their three previous albums with "One World". The band sold over four times platinum with their debut album "Supersystem" and won five New Zealand music awards in 1998.

Since then their other two albums "Communicate" and "Playground Battle" have also been hugely popular and this year they won the award for the most performed work in New Zealand at the APRA silver scroll awards. The award went to the group's vocalist, James Reid, for "Stand Up," which also won the "Radio Airplay Record of the Year" at the 2006 New Zealand Music Awards.

The Feelers formed in Christchurch in 1993 and having toured extensively since then have built a strong following, both in New Zealand and overseas.

John Roestenburg, of Wanganui Inc., the concert organisers, said he thought the fact that the Feelers new album was number one on the charts was a good indication of just how popular the concert would be. "We put a lot of thought and effort into selecting groups for this event that are well known and have a broad appeal to a fairly diverse audience. "Given their various commitments we were really pleased to be able to get The Feelers, Dave Dobbyn and th' Dudes, the House of Shem and Pearl all together here on the same night. "The fact that some of the music is currently playing on top of the charts certainly proves we have the really popular groups, and that is being reflected in the ticket sales. "It also may well be the last opportunity for fans to enjoy Dave Dobbyn and th' Dudes playing together having reunited after 25 years for their recent sell-out tour," John Roestenburg said.
