Underwater Rugby or Free and Frequent Transport for Auckland?
‘Climaction’ the Auckland climate change awareness group responsible for the reclaiming of Queen Street earlier this month, held an action at Westhaven Marina this morning. This was Climaction’s boldest action yet! The group dropped a banner off one of the tanks at Westhaven Marina, reading: Free and Frequent Public Transport or Underwater Rugby?
The group intend to take the banner to the public rally about the stadium at 12.30pm today in Aotea Square.
The event is in response to the governments continued ‘corporate interests over public good’ stance concerning their plans for a waterfront stadium and with their continued disregard for climate change issues.
‘The stadium is likely to be underwater by 2050 anyway due to sea levels rising. The idea is a $500 million plus absurdity. Any stadium built on the proposed waterfront site will have water lapping at its entrance doors in less than 50 years if at least some of this money isn’t first spent on doing more to address the climate crisis in this country,’ said Gin Barker Climaction’s spokesperson.
‘Free and frequent public transport could address both climate change issues and Auckland’s transport issues. Aucklander’s want solutions to Auckland’s transport problems and our climate crisis!’ said Gin Barker, Climaction’s media spokesperson.
