On track for increasing carriage capacity

Greater Wellington is moving with all possible speed to improve the capacity and reliability of the region’s commuter rail service, says Cr Glen Evans, Chair of Greater Wellington’s Passenger Transport Committee.

Yesterday the Passenger Transport Committee received an update on Greater Wellington’s train capacity project.
“The committee has taken on board the concerns of some passengers about the option to remove seats as a way of increasing capacity. We’ll be taking these concerns into account when we make a decision on the best interim measure for solving our current problems.

“However, before we make any decisions, we need to carry out an audit of passenger counts and carriage capacity. This will take place in early December. Once the results are ready, we’ll make a decision as soon as we can – hopefully before the end of the year.”

The options to improve rail capacity include:

Operational measures: eg. timetable adjustments and re-allocation of carriages

Introducing additional trains: eg. buying and refurbishing second-hand trains

Modifying current trains to provide more capacity: eg. providing more carriage space for standing passengers at peak times.
