ARC opposes Western Ring Road tolling and supports full trenching of rail at New Lynn
The ARC Transport Policy Committee resolved today not to support Transit NZ’s proposed tolling scheme as a means of funding the completion of the Western Ring Route by 2015. The ARC will submit a full submission on Transit NZ’s tolling proposal shortly.
Committee chairman Joel Cayford says: “Given public concern about tolling generally, and the economic viability of these SH20 tolling proposals, Transit was always on a hiding-to-nothing with this proposal.”
The committee also confirmed its support for full trenching of the Western rail line in central New Lynn, as a priority for rail funding.
Cr Cayford says the ARC is supporting Waitakere City Council’s vision for the redevelopment of New Lynn centre.
“New Lynn is one of the keys to integrating land use and transport in the Auckland region, and is identified as a major growth centre in the plan changes arising from the Local Government Auckland Amendment Act.”
The Committee’s resolution also noted:
• - the strong potential for grade separation of the Western rail line in central New Lynn to stimulate significant above ground redevelopment;
• - the urgency of the project in view of the need to manage traffic flows from SH20 crossing the Western line at New Lynn;
• - that the Auckland Regional Transport Authority has resolved to support the full trenching option.
Cr Cayford says the New Lynn resolutions will be communicated urgently to the Minister of Finance.
