Planning for the future of Belmont Regional Park
< Planning for the future of
Belmont Regional Park Greater Wellington is calling for
ideas and suggestions from the public as it kicks off a
review of Belmont Regional Park’s management plan. “I hope people will take the opportunity to make this
wonderful park – with its spectacular views and open
spaces – even better,” says Greater Wellington Landcare
Committee Chair Cr Chris Laidlaw. “The community
has already done a great job by working with Greater
Wellington to persuade the government to join in the
purchase of Waitangirua Farm from Landcorp. “Thanks to their efforts, the farm is now part of the
park and we now need to look at ways of maximising the
public value of that additional land.” The review
of Belmont Regional Park’s management plan began in 2003
but was suspended while management arrangements for sections
of the park were settled between Greater Wellington, Hutt
City Council, Department of Conservation, and Landcorp. “We’re starting the review from the beginning
because the park has changed since 2003. Now that
Waitangirua Farm and several other blocks of land in the
area are under Greater Wellington’s management and
control, we can plan the future of the park rather more
coherently than before,” says Cr Laidlaw. Greater
Wellington will hold a public meeting on the review in
November. The meeting will be advertised in local
newspapers. Following the current consultation,
Greater Wellington will develop a draft management plan for
further consultation and submissions. The submission
period runs until Friday 1 December. See www.gw.govt.nzfor
information and a submission form or phone Greater
Wellington on 04 381
