Hawkes Bay Top Cyclist Competition
Hawkes Bay Top Cyclist Competition
The Hawke's Bay Top Cyclist Competition will be run at the Pettigrew Green Arena, Taradale on the 11th October 2006. This event is aimed at Year 7-8 children from Napier, Hastings and Central Hawke's Bay.
The event has been put together in conjunction with the following stake holders - Road Safe HB, Hawke's Bay District Health Board, ACC, Tour of the Bay & Police Education. The competition has been established to address the high incidence of Fatal and injury crashes in the targeted age group within Hawke's Bay.
Each of these stake holders have a vested interest in cycling whether it be in regard to cycling safety or in the promotion of health and well being. Much hard work has gone into bringing this event together with key people from these organisations donating time and resources to ensure that the event is a success.
Competitors from each school have been chosen to compete against other schools in cycling related events such as an indoor obstacle course, road ride, written test and mountain bike course. These events will challenge the cyclists overall handling skills, road rule knowledge and road riding skills.
At the conclusion of the day there will be prizes and trophies awarded in the categories of top boy & girl cyclist for Hawke's Bay as well as several other consolation prizes. First place winners will also be treated to a ride in the Lowe Walker Rescue Helicopter, a ride on the Coastguard Rigid Hull inflatable boat, and a meal at Valentines Restaurant for their families.
A small cash prize and trophy will be awarded to the winning competitor's school. This event will hopefully become an annual competition and in time raise the profile of safe cycling in Hawke's Bay. It will also create a competitive environment between schools that will vie for the trophy each year and also promote safe cycle usage within each participating school.
