Resurfacing work on auxiliary lane from Newton Road to Western Springs
Transit New Zealand is putting down the first layers of asphalt on the additional lane and bus shoulder of the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) between Newton Road and the Western Springs off-ramp. The project is part of the final stages of improvements taking place on Auckland’s Central Motorway Junction (CMJ).
Starting on Tuesday 26, the westbound lanes and bus shoulder will be paved. Most of the work will be carried out during the day to minimise disruption for the local Eden Terrace, Arch Hill and Kingsland community.
There will be some night closures over the next month to move temporary barriers and finish resurfacing. Transit will monitor the work to make sure noise from the rollers and trucks is reduced and work taking place at night will be broken up into sections to minimise disruption.
Permanent concrete barriers have been placed along the edge of most of the new lane to improve safety and help reduce traffic noise.
Construction of the westbound lanes between Newton on-ramp and Western Springs off-ramp is scheduled to be completed at the end of November, with the completion of the entire CMJ project due a few weeks later in mid December.
When completed, the shoulder will be used as a bus priority lane during peak evening traffic and the widened carriageway will create a safer and more efficient motorway.
