FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Future of Rail An Issue for Porirua City
City Councillor Robert Shaw has asked Greater Wellington to clarify its thinking about the future of railway stations in
Porirua City.
Cr Shaw said that last week he attended two meetings, at the first he heard that a reduction in the number of stations
was being considered and that Muri Station was at risk. At the second meeting he heard people discussing the development
of the Aotea Station.
"As a result of those meetings I have written to Greater Wellington. They will be able to report on discussions with
ONTRACK who now have the ownership and management responsibilities for our rail service.
"It is vital that those involved in planning for our city all talk to each other and that everyone sings the same song.
"Planning is our City at the moment revolves around Transmission Gully, the future of the Kenepuru Hospital land, and
costs associated with the road integration and green developments for the Aotea Block. We are also considering a plan to
put apartments in the town centre.
"In all of these matters the future of the railway is critical. Discussions that take place between the rail operators
and Greater Wellington could have important outcomes for our City and I would like our Council to be fully involved in
these discussions.
"It is one thing to try to save money in the provision public transport, but the integration of developments is a far
greater challenge" Cr Shaw added.
