Zero Waste Bus Tour

Many Councils throughout New Zealand face the challenge of needing to reduce the volume of waste they are depositing in landfills. In mid-October, the Zero Waste Bus Tour will be visiting a number of towns throughout the South Island, as it takes Councillors and Waste Management Officers to the best the country has to offer in the way of waste management practices.

Towns such as Kaikoura, Timaru and Ashburton, Rolleston and Twizel, as well as Christchurch City itself, are leading the way in New Zealand with the latest in composting systems, innovation with 3-bin domestic waste collection systems, and the latest examples of best practice for resource recovery centres. Perhaps the best known of these is the tourist town of Kaikoura, where tour members will experience and see the innovative practices that have resulted in a more than 60% reduction in the volume of waste going into landfill.

The Zero Waste Trust has run several of these educative tours, and is keen to keep councillors and staff up-to-date with all the developments of the past 12-18 months. Diversion of waste from landfill varies widely among New Zealand councils, but generally corresponds to the level of awareness and knowledge of its councillors. If one of your Councillors is joining in on this tour, you can be sure they will be benefiting from the opportunity to experience a wide variety of solutions to the problems of solid waste disposal that are facing Councils right across the country.

Anyone interested in the tour and in what is considered best practice and innovation, can obtain full information from the Trust’s web-site: www.zerowaste.co.nz
