Peoples Choice backs Sylvia Taylor for Mangere
Peoples Choice has joined up with the Mangere Residents Association and thrown its support behind Sylvia Taylor for the upcoming Mangere council by-election.
Chairman Hamish Stevens said that Peoples Choice was delighted to support Sylvia and believed she would make a great city councillor for Mangere. Sylvia has been involved in the Mangere community for many years and has a deep understanding of the cares and concerns of residents.
Mr Stevens said that issues such as youth violence, graffiti, and liquor control were all top of mind issues in the ward at the moment. Peoples Choice stands for safe communities and believes the council can do more to lobby central government on behalf of its residents.
Mr Stevens said Peoples Choice had also received approaches from several Mangere small businesses concerned about steep increases in waste water charges. Peoples Choice believes a thriving small business sector is important for Manukau City’s economic growth and wants these excessive charges reviewed.
Mr Stevens said that Peoples Choice would be putting all its campaigning resources behind Sylvia and was confident she would win. “In 2004 Sylvia was only 200 votes away from being elected”.
“Peoples Choice has convincingly won two community board by-elections (in Botany and Papatoetoe) since the last local body elections, in addition to the 13 positions it won city-wide in 2004” We will be campaigning hard in Mangere too.
“Peoples Choice is a non-party-political group of ordinary residents from across Manukau. We oppose the use of party political machinery in local government as local organisations can best reflect communities’ values” said Mr Stevens.
