St Heliers beach gets winter beauty treatment

St Heliers beach gets winter beauty treatment

Good news for St Heliers beach goers as the re-sanding project, along with the re-opening of the boat ramp and playground, is expected to be completed by Christmas.

“We are making good progress with the sand replenishment,” says project manager, Lorenzo Canal. ”More than a third of the 35,000 cubic metres of sand planned for the beach is in place and we expect the progress over the next few months to continue at this rate.”

Other projects in the co-ordinated programme of work are also making good progress.

The stormwater upgrade in Tamaki Drive, The Parade and Dingle Road will begin this week, as part of the Eastern Bays “dig once” co-ordinated projects. The stormwater upgrade will reduce flooding and help manage runoff from Tamaki Drive onto St Heliers beach.

There will be some disruption to traffic with temporary lane closures and diversions from 31 July 2006 to June 2007. The disruptions will be kept to a minimum.

Since the co-ordinated projects began in April, the following milestones have been achieved:

o approximately one third of the sand has been placed on St Heliers beach so far
o
o Vector have completed the undergrounding of the powerlines and are completing work on the lights around Dingle walkway and The Parade
o
o the man-made eastern headland is fully formed and is receiving the final naturalistic surfacing
o
o the foundation for the central beach stormwater outfall has been constructed during the recent very low tides
o
o a stormwater upgrade of the nearby Mission Bay fountain has also been completed.
o

From December 2006 through to June 2007, work will continue on Stage 2 of the stormwater upgrade (along the Parade and Dingle Dell). During this period, the footpath upgrade of The Parade and Dingle walkway will also take place.

Consultation on the St Heliers beach foreshore reserve upgrade will begin later this year, with construction planned for the new year.
