Council to assist pensioners with garden irrigation
The Kapiti Coast District Council is to fit rain tanks into the gardens of 20 of the residents of Council flats for elderly people, Kapiti Coast District Council Water Use Coordinator Ben Thompson said today.
The Green Plumber rain tank initiative is designed to assist some of the keen gardeners in the flats to maintain healthy gardens, especially during the summer months when water is at its most scarce.
The initiative, in conjunction with Mico Plumbing, Crighton ITM and Kapiti Skills Centre, involves installing rainwater tanks that will hold around 400 litres of water.
“This may not sound like a lot but it’s enough to provide irrigation for a standard vegetable garden or one or two trees, and a practical way to assist local residents to use our water efficiently.
“Rainwater is ideal for garden irrigation during the summer months, and we’re pleased we can install these into the gardens of some of the area’s most active gardeners,” Ben said.
