Youth help deliver own party safe message

The Kapiti Coast District Council recently began handing out Safe Party Packs in a CD wallet to the youth of Kapiti.

The contents of the packs are the result of careful consideration and consultation, according to Kapiti Coast District Council’s Youth Development Coordinator Bronagh Moloney. “They contain information such as how to stay safe at parties, what to do if you get into trouble, as well as supportive information and choices for parents.

“Feedback from individuals given a Party Pack has been positive, with both young people and parents finding the information interesting and helpful.

“However, without the wonderful efforts of the team at Kapiti Skills in assembling the packs the distribution would not have been as successful as it has been,” Bronagh said.

“Each sticker had to be stuck individually onto each sleeve of the CD wallet; there were eight stickers per CD wallet and 1000 packs in total. It was a major job requiring a lot of concentration and precision.”

The team at Kapiti Skills was made up of young people who had all left school for various reasons, each with their own set of social issues. A major success of the project was that the group of young people assembling the packs were also the target audience for the project.

“As a result of their involvement, not only have they gained information around safe partying, access to alcohol and positive choices, but they also got the opportunity to develop a strong work ethic, gain some NZQA accreditations, show precision, and help deliver a message pertinent to all youth,” Bronagh Moloney said.

Their efforts were recently acknowledged with certificates of achievement presented to them by Mayor Alan Milne.
