Makara Walkway reopens
The Makara Walkway near Wellington is open again but people should take care walking around fenced off sections of track damaged during last week’s storms.
The popular track, which begins and ends at Makara Beach 16 km north of Wellington, was closed by the Department of Conservation a week ago after sections of it were scoured out by heavy seas.
“We have fenced off the eroded areas but it is now narrower in parts so we are asking people using the track to take extra care until repairs are completed,” DOC visitor assets programme manager Peter Blaxter said.
