Putumohio: weaving language and people together

AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL

MEDIA RELEASE

Putumohio: weaving language and people together

To celebrate the cultural richness and importance of the Maori language, five major libraries in the Auckland region are launching Putumohio, an online catalogue in Te Reo Maori, as part of Te Wiki o te Reo (Maori Language Week, 24 to 30 July).

Putumohio is the Maori version of the libraries’ online catalogue that can be accessed via the regional libraries’ individual websites where customers can search for thousands of books, CDs, DVDs, reference material and much more.

The meaning of the word Putumohio is a person who gathers and accumulates knowledge to enhance ones life.

The five regional libraries or eLGAR (Libraries for a Greater Auckland Region) are Rodney District, North Shore City, Manakau City, Waitakere City and Auckland City Libraries. They will launch Putumohio on Tuesday, 25 July at the Central City Library in Auckland city.

Putumohio is a great example of the libraries’ combined efforts and commitment to work together for the betterment of the Auckland region. It also reflects the libraries’ commitment to celebrate the living language and heritage that is Te Reo Maori making it available for all New Zealanders.

Geoff Chamberlain, eLGAR Chairperson and North Shore Libraries’ service manager, says:

“Putumohio is a significant achievement. It is a fitting example of the tangible benefits that will flow from the co-operation between the five regional libraries."
