Security Footage Helps Pinpoint Victim's Movements
Police investigating the slaying of Karori man Tony Stanlake know that he was alive at lunchtime last Thursday.
Detective Inspector Mike Arnerich, head of the Wellington CIB Operation Red Rocks homicide team, said police have obtained security footage that shows 62-year-old Tony Stanlake shopping at Bunnings Warehouse in Adelaide Road at 12.13pm on Thursday, 6 July.
Photo images show Mr Stanlake was wearing black trousers, a deep blue V necked top and a black leather jacket.
Detective Inspector Arnerich said a receipt found at Mr Stanlake's home indicated he had been to Bunnings on Thursday, and this was confirmed by the footage.
"We also know he was a regular visitor to a Karori cafe and he was there on Thursday morning for a coffee. Shortly afterwards Tony was at Woolworths in Karori and he bought some grocery items there at 11.41am.
"The last sighting we know about was at Bunnings at 12.13pm the same afternoon. These sightings of Tony are important as they show he was alive and well on Thursday afternoon. What he did next, where he went and who he saw before his body was found at Owhiro Bay beach on Sunday morning is not yet known."
Detective Inspector Arnerich said police are not sure as yet if the jacket or top are at Mr Stanlake's home.
"We can't exclude the possibility that he was wearing either item at the time of his death."
Police expect the forensic examination of Mr Stanlake's home will take several days. "These scenes can't be rushed. We need to be absolutely thorough in our search and will take as long as we need to complete the job."
Police urge people with information to call the 0508 733 762 hotline information.
