Auckland City’s firm bond with Pacific Community

The Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs will today sign a memorandum of understanding with Auckland City, to promote a collaborative partnership which will benefit the city’s large Pacific community.

The memorandum will help to maintain and develop the relationship between the council and the ministry and facilitate greater interaction between the council and the Pacific Island community.

Fuimaono Les McCarthy, chief executive of the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs says the Ministry exists to promote the development of Pacific peoples in New Zealand.

“The memorandum signifies a strong bond between the council and the Ministry and a clear understanding of the way we will work together to enable Pacific peoples to fully contribute to life in Auckland.”

As part of the memorandum, the council and the ministry have established a working agreement that will see the two organisations build clear lines of communication, work in partnership and benefit from combining their unique skills and expertise.

Mayor of Auckland city Dick Hubbard says, “We are the largest Polynesian city in the world and we are proud of it.”

“This memorandum will cement the existing relationship between the council and the ministry and ensure that we encourage Pacific peoples to participate fully in the city, and develop socially, economically and culturally within Auckland.”

Fuimaono Les McCarthy, chief executive of the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs and David Rankin, chief executive of Auckland City will sign the memorandum.
