New landfill charges to help reduce waste
New landfill charges to help reduce waste
Kapiti Coast District Council has adopted new landfill charges at Otaihanga Landfill and Otaki Transfer Station which come into effect from this Saturday July 17 2006. There have been no increases in charges since 2002.
The new charges aim to bring Kapiti Coast into line with rates charged by neighbouring local authorities and to increase rates of recycling, reducing the waste currently being brought to the landfill which has limited airspace remaining.
At the
moment there is pressure on the airspace from out of the
District because of the lower Kapiti Coast charges. There
are also increased costs from recycling (e.g. glass
recycling costs are rising and this is a national
issue.)
Adopting charges that are in line with
neighbouring authorities will help reduce the volume of
waste coming into Kapiti from these areas.
The other major
change concerns greenwaste charges.
Currently the
Kapiti Coast District Council accepts greenwaste at no
charge to residents and businesses within Kapiti Coast
District. To reduce out of District waste, an ‘out of
District’ rate will be charged from 17 July 2006.
Local
operators collecting and delivering greenwaste from within
the District will have to be registered with the Kapiti
Coast District Council to ensure they are not charged.
The new rates will be advertised in local papers, at the landfill and on the Council’s website.
