Making it easier to get on your bike
North Shore City Council wants to know what you think of its plan to provide recreational cycling facilities in parks and reserves across the city.
The Draft Recreational Cycling Plan is open for comment from Monday, June 12 to Friday, July 28.
North Shore City Council community services and parks committee chairwoman, Margaret Miles, says the aim is to provide pleasant and safe places to cycle.
"The network of recreational cycling paths and facilities in our parks and reserves would cater for all levels of fitness and ability, and appropriate areas could also be developed for BMX and mountain biking."
Initial feedback showed people wanted safe and convenient cycleways and walkways for local journeys, exercise and recreation, to connect communities and to provide links to shops, schools and reserves.
For example one of the proposed routes, around Northcote and Birkenhead, would connect Tuff Crater, Onepoto Basin, Rotary Grove, Kauri Glen Reserve, Birkenhead War Memorial Park and Eskdale Reserve, using small stretches of road in between.
"This kind of network would give people easier and safer access to the open spaces in our city," says Councillor Miles.
