Man Injured In Fishing Boat Accident

Man Injured In Fishing Boat Accident

The Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the Marlborough Sounds earlier today to help a man injured during an accident on a fishing boat.

The 58 year old man was onboard a fishing boat in Te Pangu Bay when a wire cable snapped and struck the man.

He suffered severe injuries to both lower legs.

The Westpac Rescue helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic onboard, was called to the scene about 1 pm this afternoon. The helicopter was shut down at the scene so that the paramedic and helicopter crew could stabilise the man prior to transporting him to Wellington Hospital.

"The fishing boat crew did a great job stabilising the man" says Keith Frewen, Westpac Rescue Helicopter crewman. "By time we got there they had the bleeding under control. They really did everything right".

The man arrived at Wellington Hospital at 2:30 in the afternoon and has been admitted to hospital. He is understood to be in a serious condition.
