Are you eligible?

If you've got an initiative that will help strengthen our community and get people involved, you might be eligible for a community support grant.

Applications are now open for North Shore City Council's community grants, the community facilities fund, and creative communities funding.

North Shore City deputy mayor, Dianne Hale, says the grants are aimed at organisations that are not eligible for funding from other sources.

"We're lucky to have so many groups that make a difference in our community, and we show our appreciation and support with this funding," she says.

"But because of the vast number and scope of these groups, there's always a high demand."

Last year North Shore City Council gave $1.7m to 69 different groups. The city's six community boards gave out a further $120,000.

Two groups who received funding last year were the Kaipatiki Project and Coastguard North Shore.

The Kaipatiki Project offers environmental education and runs ecological restoration programmes. Coastguard North Shore's grant went to operating costs so it could put its energy into training and search and rescue services.

"In a nutshell, this support has contributed greatly to us fulfilling our mission of saving lives at sea," says Coastguard North Shore secretary, John Porter.

The deputy chairman of the community services and parks committee, Peter White, will chair this year's assessment committee of six councillors - representing each community board area - with applications being considered in early August.

Councillor White says both organisations provide outstanding service to the community.

"We were delighted to support such worthy groups who contribute so much to our city," he says.

Applications for council grants are open until June 30, 2006, and forms are available at www.northshorecity.govt.nz from area offices, or by calling 486 8600.
