Mayor welcomes waterfront tribute

Mayor of Auckland City Dick Hubbard warmly welcomes the revised memorial to one of our most prominent sporting heroes Sir Peter Blake, and is looking forward to working with The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa and New Zealand Maritime Museum on the project.

“This will be a world class, state of the art, interactive project that will excite and inspire millions of Aucklanders, school children and international visitors in future years,” Mayor Hubbard says, “and for a $2 million investment from Auckland City we’ll get an $8 million facility.”

“But more importantly, this memorial achieves the wish of Sir Peter Blake and his wife Lady Blake, who wanted the national icon NZL-32 displayed publicly for the benefit of all people.”

“The story of Sir Peter Blake is a wonderful one - and it happened right here on our waterfront – and we want it told on our waterfront, in the City of Sails.”

The Mayor will take the issue of the memorial to a council Combined Committee meeting on June 22.
