Lane shift on Northwestern Motorway from Bond St to Newton Rd
As part of ongoing improvements taking place on Auckland's Central Motorway Junction, eastbound (citybound) lanes between Bond St and Newton Rd on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) will be moved onto a temporary lane layout for approximately three months.
All eastbound lanes will move to the left to make space along the median to allow the grass strip in this section of motorway to be narrowed and concrete safety barriers to be installed. The lanes will be widened giving space for an extra lane to be added from the west of Bond St to Newton Road off-ramp. Through traffic to the Port and south of Auckland will continue to use the two right side lanes.
Earthworks to stabilise the area, as well as drainage, barrier installation, paving, and the installation of an emergency access gate will also be undertaken as part of the work.
Most of the work will be carried out during the day, except during the afternoon peak when no work will take place for safety reasons. There will be night closures on selected nights depending on weather.
Realigning the lanes from Bond St to Newton Rd will give better access from SH16 to the new Nelson St off-ramp (in the city) and to the Northern Motorway (SH16 to SH1) northbound link which is due to open late this year.
Motorists are asked to drive with caution and observe the signposted changes.
