Re:Define - Challenge youth stereotypes

Young people from around North Shore City will take time out to attend a one-day summit to talk about crime during Youth Week 2006, being held from May 15 to 21.

Converse '06 - The Shore Youth Summit, is being held at ActivZone on Wednesday, May 17, and will cover the topic of Re:Defining our Perceptions of Crime.

North Shore City Council's community advisor for youth, Pam Baillie, says it is a great opportunity to get young people together to exchange ideas on a hot topic.

"The aim is to inspire young people to challenge the stereotypes surrounding their culture and start to express how they see themselves, rather than how society sees them," she says.

"There will be workshops on topics such as youth crews and gangs, graffiti and legal and illegal drugs, as well as guest speakers and a celebrity debate."

The following day, Thursday, May 18, members of the Shore Youth Council and Students Against Driving Drunk will also be at Glenfield Mall from 3.30pm to 7.30pm giving out updated youth-related information.

This year's Shore Youth Council co-chairs, Stephanie Rahardja, from Carmel College, and William Cheyne, from Westlake Boys' High School, will be on hand.

Then there is LIBEL at ActivZone in Downing St, Glenfield on Saturday, May 20. Organised by North Shore Libraries, the free event for teens will feature live bands The Rabble, Jonny Doom and the Forcefields, and Axis Mile.

ActivZone's internet café will also feature the library's new teen web pages. The site includes book and music reviews, youth events, homework help and e-resources, as well as the opportunity to give feedback.

There will also be a graphic art paint bombing demonstration by Disruptiv Art, Zoe and Sharnika from So you think you can Dance, the X-Box truck on site, and a prize draw for an MP3 player.
