Council endorses proposed rainwater tank rebate programme for new homes

Developers putting in rainwater tanks could soon be eligible for a partial refund of their development levies in a new proposal endorsed by Auckland City’s Works and Services Committee yesterday.

Under the proposed programme, Auckland City would refund developers $1,000 once an approved rainwater tank was installed for non-potable water supply within a development.

The refund, along with savings on water and wastewater charges under current Metrowater policies, will allow the “payback” period for the investment in the tank to be reduced to between three and six years, depending on the type and size of the dwelling.

“This programme aims to encourage conservation and re-use of water which will benefit the environment and reduce costs for residents,” says Councillor Neil Abel, chairperson of the Works and Services Committee. “Rainwater tanks can assist in relieving pressure on aspects of the city’s stormwater system.”

Auckland City has produced a manual to provide developers with information about rainwater tanks, and the standards and specifications required. The manual also contains an application form and information on how to apply for the refund.

Subject to approval by council through Auckland City’s Long-term council community plan process, the proposed programme will be launched on 1 July.
