Pacific Islands Advisory Board elections
Pacific Island people are invited to stand for election to the Auckland City Pacific Islands Advisory Board.
The board will consist of members from across the Pacific Island community and work in partnership with Auckland City Council and the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs.
The board will provide a key link between the council and the Pacific Island community and enable greater consultation and communication between the two.
Councillor John Hinchcliff, chairperson of the Partnership Committee says, "The council is very aware that we need to encourage greater participation in democratic processes from the Pacific Island communities. We will also look at ways to communicate more effectively with these groups.
"The Pacific Island community makes up almost 14 per cent of Auckland city's population and we want their voices to be heard.
"This board will create a positive partnership between the communities and the council and enable us to consult more effectively with Pacific Island people.
"This community has an amazing spirit and their input into decisions about Auckland city will be beneficial to all of Auckland."
People of Pacific Island descent are invited to stand for nomination at the elections, which take place during the weeks commencing 22 and 29 May. Nominations should be submitted by 19 May.

JR Pereira, the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs representative for the community working party, says "It is important that all members of the Pacific Island community attend the elections and vote for the person they wish to represent them.
"This board will help to increase the social and economic development of Pacific Island communities within Auckland city. It is a real opportunity for members of our community to participate in decision which will affect our futures."
