Something old, something new
Auckland’s unique natural, cultural and built heritage will be celebrated again this year from 16 – 24 September with the Auckland Heritage Festival.
Previously known as Heritage Week, the event builds on the success of the past two years and has been extended over two weekends to increase its accessibility to the public.
Organisations and local groups are invited to submit their events for inclusion in the 2006 calendar. A set of criteria has been introduced this year to ensure a diverse range of events.
A preference will be given to those events that fit with the objectives of the Auckland Heritage Festival programme:
o are available free or at minimal cost
o incorporate an aspect of learning or awareness of the heritage of Auckland city
o incorporate formally recognised heritage (such as scheduled or protected buildings, sites or items and natural, landscape or cultural features)
o their primary purpose is not to promote the contributor’s business or for their financial gain.
A range of events were included in last year’s programme, from guided heritage walks and film screenings to open days and tours of historic Auckland sites.
The Auckland Heritage Festival is part of Auckland City’s long-term campaign to protect heritage places, objects and buildings, and to encourage the public to celebrate their city’s unique heritage.
Chairperson of the Environment, Heritage and Urban Form Committee, Councillor Christine Caughey, says the festival is a wonderful opportunity for the city to remember days gone by and learn more about the rich history of Auckland’s past.
“We encourage organisations and groups with an interest in the city’s heritage to apply for inclusion in the 2006 Auckland Heritage Festival programme. By offering a diverse range of activities we can ensure the celebration of Auckland’s heritage is even better than previous events,” says Ms Caughey.
