Birkenhead Library & Civic Centre Library Project

Birkenhead Library & Civic Centre Library Project

The Birkenhead-Northcote Community Board has reaffirmed its support for the construction of a new Birkenhead Library &Civic Centre building on the Nell Fisher Reserve in Birkenhead. Like members of the local community it is unhappy that the project has been delayed but it is pleased that the public hearing of the rezoning of part of the Nell Fisher Reserve are scheduled to get underway next week on Friday 28 April 2006.

Peter Burn the Community Board Chair says “that the process of getting the project started has been a frustrating one and the public has given the Board tremendous support in its efforts to bring the new complex to fruition”. He hopes that the hearing of the proposed zone change will “pave the way” for an early commencement to the building program. “This is a positive step to overcome the problems posed by the current zoning designation of the Nell Fisher Reserve and once it is approved we will be immediately seeking a Resource Consent to get the new complex underway” Mr Burn says.

“The Community Board remains determined to ensure that the people of Birkenhead get the community facilities they deserve and I would urge the public to take a keen interest in the hearings next week” Mr Burn said.

The hearings of the proposed zone change will commence at 9.30am in the Council Chambers at Takapuna on Friday 28 April 2006.
