Pacific disability fono for Auckland City

AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL
MEDIA RELEASE

18 April 2006

Pacific disability fono for Auckland City

Auckland City will host its first ever disability forum for Pacific peoples this weekend.

The fono (forum) will be opened by Mayor of Auckland city, Dick Hubbard, and will be an opportunity for the Pacific disability community to come together to celebrate diversity and share information.

Event committee member, Dr Rod Watts, Ministry of Health says, “The whole day will be a chance to focus on what is currently being done and what we can do in future to further improve the lives of disabled Pacific peoples and their aiga (family/whanau) living in Auckland.

“The fono will also provide a wide range of information about accessing disability services and details on a new campaign to promote disability awareness amongst the Pacific community.

“It will also be a great networking opportunity. Disabled people enjoy meeting and socialising the same as all other people. The fono will be a time to discuss all issues that are important in their lives”

Auckland City’s strategic advisor for disability, Minnie Baragwanath says that the council is proud to host and support the event, which is the first of its kind for the city.

“Auckland has one of the largest populations of Pacific Island people in New Zealand and we want to enable all people within this community to get the most out of Auckland life.

“Auckland City is committed to being an inclusive organisation and supports the rights of every individual to be able to participate fully in society.

Around 250 people are expected to attend the event, which will take place on Saturday 22 April at the Fale Pasefika, University of Auckland.

Ends

The Auckland City Pacific Disability Fono takes place at 9am-3pm, 22 April 2006, at Fale Pasefika, University of Auckland, 20-26 Wynward Street.
