Recommendation on Transmission Gully Welcomed

Press Release

Chamber Welcomes Council Recommendation on Transmission Gully

The Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce today welcomed last week’s announcement by Wellington City that it would be recommending to Councillors that they accept the Western Corridor Hearings Sub-Committee’s key conclusion of supporting the Transmission Gully Motorway plan.

“We hope that Councillors will accept the Council’s recommendations. This would send a powerful message to Government that the Wellington Region is unified and that we want Transmission Gully to progress without further delay,” said Charles Finny, CEO of the Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce.

“Wellington City Council raises legitimate concerns about urban form and the importance of other roading projects for the region. The Chamber agrees that Transmission Gully must not be allowed to soak up all resources for roading in the region. Likewise Councils such as Porirua and Kapiti will have to ensure that their planning rules are sufficiently rigorous to minimise any urban sprawl that might result from the construction of Transmission Gully”, Charles Finny continued.

“The Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce surveyed its membership last week on the Western Corridor issue. This survey showed that 92% of Chamber members supported Transmission Gully as the long term strategic solution to road congestion problems on the Western Corridor. Of those that supported Transmission Gully 99% supported an immediate start on the project so that it can be completed in 10 years. Given this strong level of support, Chamber members will clearly welcome the support by Wellington City Councillors of the recommendation from the City Council to support Transmission Gully”, Charles Finny said.

“This has not been an easy issue for any of the region’s councils. The Chamber welcomes the leadership being shown by Mayor Kerry Prendergast in making this recommendation to her Council. Mayor Predergast deserves the full support of the region in her encouragement of Councillors to vote in favour of the recommendation”, Charles Finny concluded.
