North Shore City Council will continue to buy park land to provide plenty of open space for people to enjoy, and preserve the city's green and leafy character.
The council plans to invest $109m over the next 10 years purchasing land for parks, and another $255m maintaining, renewing and upgrading parks, including sportsfields, across the city.
North Shore City community services and parks committee chairwoman, Margaret Miles, says the time, effort and money being spent is well worth it.
"The $15m we'll be spending each year on the 500 parks across our city is essential, but we also need to cater for growing areas," she says.
"It's important to people that we preserve the character of North Shore City - which for many people is the outdoor lifestyle."
Over the past 18 months park land has been acquired at Browns Bay Beachfront Reserve, Birkenhead, Castor Bay, Takapuna beachfront and Albany. The council is also helping Chelsea Park Trust secure land surrounding the iconic Chelsea Sugar refinery in Birkenhead.
The money is earmarked in North Shore City's 2006-2016 Draft City Plan, which is currently out for public consultation. It sets out the future direction, priorities and costs of running the city over the next 10 years.
The proposed average rates increase is 8.9 per cent in the first year, and 7.1 per cent in the years after that.
Key parks projects in the coming year include the Sanders Reserve development in Paremoremo, Northboro Reserve playground at Hauraki, a car park at Marlborough Park and the Takapuna and Devonport coastal walkways.
People can have their say on the 2006-2016 Draft City Plan until 5pm on April 26, either by filling in the reply-paid submission form that arrived in their letterbox with the summary newsletter, or online at www.northshorecity.govt.nz
The form can also be used to nominate a time to present to the council's hearings committee, which will meet in May and June. Any changes will be reflected in the final, approved plan, which will be adopted on June 30.
