Food hygiene workshop for ethnic communities

Auckland city's food premise operators and manufacturers will have an opportunity to comment on proposed plans to change New Zealand's food regulations at a public workshop held next Monday.

The workshop, to be held by the New Zealand Food Standards Authority (NZFSA), is aimed specifically at ethnic communities who work in the production, distribution or sale of food.

The NZFSA is currently conducting a review of food hygiene legislation in New Zealand which will have a significant impact on restaurant and other food businesses.

"The proposed changes to food hygiene legislation will have a major impact on the day to day running of many food premises, so we urge those involved with the food industry to attend Monday's workshop so they understand what is happening," says Chris Dee, Auckland City's environmental health and licensing manager. "The review aims to improve food safety for consumers and places the responsibility on the operator for ensuring that safety.

"The current food hygiene regulations were last updated in the late 1980's, meaning that many aspects are outdated and inconsistent with today's restaurant and food manufacturing environment."
