'Face-lift' planned for Onehunga Bay Reserve

Auckland City is asking local residents and members of the public to comment on plans for an upgrade of Onehunga Bay Reserve and lagoon.

The upgrade is designed to maximise the reserve's recreational potential as well as to improve the water quality of Onehunga Bay Lagoon.

The draft concept plan for the reserve addresses issues such as limited access to the beach, no access to the lagoon's deep water, an incomplete path network, inadequate shade, poor park furniture layout and a lack of signage.

The concept plan will be implemented in four stages between mid-2007 and mid-2011.

The consultation will also address the issue of how best to control the growth of sea lettuce in the lagoon that is limiting recreational activities.

Susan Hunter, Auckland City's landscape architect, says "This reserve is the main open space for the lower Onehunga area and although currently used for water sports, dog exercise and informal recreation, it is not used to its full potential. We hope to improve the condition of the lagoon and create pleasant areas and facilities within the reserve that will attract users to relax, play and attend events."

There are several ways to give your feedback:

- download a submission form online at www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/projects from 31 March

- fill out the feedback form included in an information flyer that will be delivered to households and available at the Onehunga Community Library in early April

- come along to an open day on Saturday 8 April from 9am - noon (if it is raining the open day will be held in the foyer of the Onehunga Community Library).
