Square Design takes gold

Media Release
20 March 2006

Square Design takes gold

The urban design of Manukau Square has won a gold award from the landscape architecture industry’s experts.

The redeveloped square won the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects gold award in the urban design category, recognising excellence in landscape architecture in an urban environment.

Isthmus Group, together with Tara Dyer, also won gold for its visionary design of Barry Curtis Park’s regional playground.

Manukau Square has been redeveloped and beautified with planting, paving, lighting and custom furniture and includes a new road which links Osterley Way and Putney Way.

Brigitte de Ronde, Manukau City Council’s Manager, City Design and Planning, says the award, to Isthmus Design who designed the project for council, is a pleasing recognition of the city’s commitment to excellence in urban design.

“This recognition from fellow professionals in landscape architecture reinforces Manukau City’s commitment to providing attractive civic open spaces,” says Ms de Ronde.

“We want to ensure our public places are culturally and economically vibrant places to work, live and play and this award underscores the success of that strategy”.

The square upgrade project is part of the Manukau City Centre Concept Plan and an important first step in revitalising the city centre. Manukau's city centre will eventually have a residential population of up to 8,000.
